After graduating magna cum laude from Pace Law School, ranked fourth in her class, Gönül Aksoy, has become the newest and a most promising addition to Green & Willstatter. She is an up-and-coming criminal defense attorney who has already accumulated a wealth of experience in both federal and state level criminal litigation.

Recently, her outstanding work on a sentencing memorandum helped convince a tough judge to sentence a client who was facing seven years’ imprisonment to a term of just two years, making him eligible for release in less than six months’ time.

Prior to joining our firm, Ms. Aksoy assisted lead counsel in several complex federal trials. Most notably, she worked as part of the defense team in United States v. Carneglia, 08 Cr. 0076 (JBW) in the Eastern District of New York and United States v. Solomonyan et. al., S1 05 Cr. 327 (RJH) in the Southern District of New York.  Carneglia involved an unusually complex Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (“RICO”) conspiracy, where the client was charged with fifteen racketeering acts, some of which were also charged as separate counts, in the context of an overarching Gambino crime family enterprise.  Solomonyan was a multi-defendant arms trafficking conspiracy case in which the client was named as the lead defendant.  In both these cases, Ms. Aksoy’s strong legal reasoning, drafting skills and careful review of discovery led to critical wins on certain evidentiary and pre-trial matters.

Further, in her final year of law school, Ms. Aksoy was honored to be selected for the Criminal Defense Clinic at Pace Law School. As part of her curriculum in this clinic, she worked with the Legal Aid Society and represented clients charged with misdemeanors in the Bronx Criminal Court. She proved herself a zealous advocate in open court as well as in other stages of litigation. Indeed, she went to great lengths to investigate the allegations in each case carefully and often her investigations revealed facts which she was later able to use to her client’s advantage.  For example, in one case, she discovered that the prosecutor had not had contact with the complainant for a considerable period of time even though he had consistently stated in and outside of court that he was ready for trial. This information enabled her to secure a dismissal of her client’s case.
